I love these products!  I have not tried a single one that I’ve been disappointed with!

1. Create a Budget

Decide how much you will spend each week on food. ($75-$100 per week works well for 2 people.)

This budget also will include eating out!  Be very careful!  You can lose half of your weekly budget on one good eat-out meal!

2. Necessities

Decide which items are necessities in your household that should be restocked regularly.

Usual items: Milk, butter, bread, cheese, apples, carrots, onions, cereal, pasta, chicken, etc…

3. The Shopping List

Keep a shopping list in the kitchen, adding to it as the necessities run out.

(Sorry, chocolate and ice cream, as much as I hate to say it, are NOT necessities.)

4. Plan ahead.

This is the one I have the most trouble with.  But try each week to keep in mind what your plans are, and what days you’ll need to cook.  If someone invites you over – go!  This only helps your budget.   Just remember not to buy extra food that week since you won’t need to cook for that meal.

If you’re the type who can plan a week of meals ahead of time, do it!

5. Coupons!

Commercial: I love Fresh and Easy!  Sign up for their weekly emails and you get coupons for $10 of your entire purchase of $50!  What other grocery store does that!?!

Seriously though, you are your best friend when it comes to saving $. Take the time to look for coupons.  They help a great deal and aren’t that hard to get a hold of.  It’s a great feeling when you buy $100 worth of groceries for $80 and end up having $20 left of your budget for going out!  (In ‘n Out for 2 people is only about $10!  You could eat out twice in one week!)

6. The Shopping Trip

Rule #1: Stick to the list!

Rule #2: Don’t stick to the list!

Ok, if it’s a necessity, stick to the list.  If it’s on sale and you know you’ll use it, don’t stick to the list. (Again, chocolate and ice cream do not count here!)

Rule #3: Treat yourself!

Chocolate and Ice cream count here!  Treat yourself to 1, and only 1 thing in the store that is not a necessity.  Try not to exceed $6 on this item.  Bonus: on sale treats come with so much less guilt!

Rule #4: Get to know the staff and especially the manager.

The grocery store is filled with nice people who really will help you if you only ask.  They’ll point you to the best deals, slip you extra coupons, and make sure you’re taken care of each and every time you shop.  In addition, the grocery store becomes another friendly place, rather than just another weekly chore.

Rule #5: Buy from the “soon to expire” sale food items.  (Usually only applies to fresh food markets.)

If you plan to use the meat immediately or are willing to freeze it for another time, buy the ground turkey that’s only $.98 rather than the $3.79 fresh pack.  It’s the same meat!  A day or so after the expiration date will not kill you.  Same with lettuce and breads, etc. You can buy them for sometimes 1/4 of their normal price!  They’re the same food!  Just be sure you’ll use them.

7. Don’t spend it all if you don’t have to!

One of the most rewarding things is knowing that at the end of the week, you’re still left with extra.  Save it!  After all, that was the point of this whole thing anyway!  :)
